I have had cataract surgery and can now see clearly for distance. However I would like to wear sunglasses to read.

Patient X is 55 and had cataract surgery two years ago. Their distance vision is very good, but they have started to need to use simple reading glasses. They are going away to Hawaii as their child is getting married on the beach. They want to be able to read the order of service but also see the celebrant clearly.

Patient X came into the practice and booked an appointment with one of our Dispensing Team. They recommended a Maui Jim® polarized bifocal reader, this is a sunglass that gives Patient X the freedom of not having to switch between glasses whilst watching the ceremony. Patient X was able to choose from a large selection of Maui Jim frames. They were very happy with the opportunity to customize the frame and the lens colour.

The Maui Jim bifocal has no prescription for the distance part of the lens but does have a reading magnifier towards the bottom, which is hidden as it is on the back surface. It allows the patient to watch the wedding ceremony and read the order of service without having to constantly swap to their pair of simple reading glasses.

Maui Jim recommend the polarized bifocal, their website says ‘No one will know that you’re wearing bifocals, as our unique bifocal element is nearly undetectable. You shouldn’t have to give up vivid clarity and sumptuous colour just to enjoy some time in the sun – and with your new Maui Jim reader sunglasses, you won’t have to! Create your own personalized pair of men’s or women’s sunglass readers today and start to see your world with new eyes.’
