Going on holiday but can’t read in Sunglasses (case study)

Patient X recently visited the practice as they were going on holiday to Spain. While sitting in the garden at home, they noticed that they were struggling to read while wearing their sunglasses. Patient X currently wears a pair of sunglasses with their distance prescription from last year. However, since turning 43, Patient X has been experiencing difficulty reading and has resorted to moving things further away.

Patient X was scheduled for a sight test with one of our optometrists, who determined that the patient is now presbyopic. Presbyopia refers to the gradual loss of the eyes’ ability to focus on nearby objects or text, which is a normal occurrence that often begins around the age of 40. The patient is now having trouble accommodating and requires a reading prescription.

Afterward, Patient X consulted with one of our dispensing opticians and expressed their desire to be able to read while lounging on the sunbed and watching their children play in the pool. The dispensing optician recommended a pair of varifocal sunglasses, which would allow Patient X the freedom to read their book while also keeping an eye on their children without the need to switch between different pairs of glasses. Additionally, the dispensing optician suggested a polarized lens, which is treated with a special chemical to filter light and block glare from entering the patient’s eyes. The optician specifically recommended Maui Jim as a brand that offers patented polarized lens technology called PolarizedPlus2®. These lenses eliminate harsh glare, enhance color washed out by the sun, provide 100% protection against harmful UV rays, reduce eye fatigue, and maintain clear vision and sharp depth perception even in challenging lighting conditions. Patient X decided to purchase a pair, which arrived two weeks later at the practice.

Patient X scheduled a collection appointment with our dispensing opticians. The team double-checked the measurements, fitted the sunglasses to the patient, and explained how varifocal lenses work. Patient X was satisfied with the sunglasses and mentioned that they would provide feedback on their experience.

Patient X recently returned from their holiday and provided a glowing review. They were amazed at how easily they could switch between different focal lengths. Furthermore, they were delighted that the lens’s color remained consistent and did not become dull or dark like their previous pairs of sunglasses. Patient X was so pleased with their purchase that they have already recommended Orriss & Low Optometrists and Maui Jim Sunglasses to their friends and family.
