I am struggling to read in bed whilst wearing Varifocals.

Case Study Issue

Patient X came in as they were struggling to read in their varifocals whilst lying down in bed. They said that they were perfect for everything else but they struggled to read and didn’t want to sit up as they had issues with their back.

Solution

Patient X saw one of our Dispensing Opticians who recommended a pair of reading glasses. They suggested this because it will give Patient X a full reading zone as oppose to needing to get the sweet spot of their varifocals. Patient X had a look for a pair of frames, they wanted something with a larger lens. The Dispensing Optician picked out a few different frames and Patient X chose their favourite.

When the lenses came in from the manufacturer they were checked to make sure they had been made correctly and the patient was called to book in for an appointment. They attended the appointment with one of our Dispensing Opticians and the glasses were adjusted and fitted to the patient. The vision in the glasses was checked and Patient X could read the smallest print. They said they were looking forward to reading in bed later that night.

Recumbent Spectacles – Low Vision Aid

For people who are bed bound this solution might not be enough. We can offer patients a pair of Recumbent Spectacles.  These are spectacles, that are equipped with reflecting prism that enables a person who is lying flat on their back to see straight ahead whilst looking straight up. They consist of a pair of prisms which are mounted on a frame that can either be worn over their glasses or have the patients prescription incorporated into them.
